I keep my old land line phone plugged just because you never know, and also because I'm old fashioned. 9/10 calls are telemarketers, so I don't even answer it when it rings, I just let it roll to the machine. Just now, a man with a thick Pakistani/Indian/South Asian accent left a message, saying he was "Officer John Marshall" from the "Crime Investigation Department of IRS". After telling my wife that there were some serious charges leveled against her by his department, and that she needed to call immediately to clear it up, he finished with, "Thank you, and may God save you."

Holy shit, this must be serious.

IRS doesnt call first from what I remember. They will just show up with the wickedest looking badge you have ever seen. Screw that. I had them show up to my work once looking for a coworker.

Just because you spend your entire day impersonating a government official in order to steal people's money doesn't mean you can't spread God's love, right?

And people complain that they've taken God out of the government.

Right. I actually looked that up when I got a similar call last year (without the "God" bit), and the IRS will only ever notify you in writing or, as you say, show up with that wicked Eliot Ness T-Man shield.

And they take it from the little guy because it's easy and they can't fight back. F**king bullies.

Implausible name, Implausible department, Implausible charges, Implausible sendoff.

It's the new Nigerian Prince 419 scam!

Call back from a payphone. Go along far enough to know where they want you to send the money. Give their contact info to the cops. Record everything and post on Oppo.

What's a "payphone?" Seriously, I haven't seen one of those in years (I remember when calls were still a dime), but I like your idea. They're probably calling from Jalalabad, though.

Actually the IRS is a lot more forgiving than you would expect. You just have to put forth the effort to show them you are doing the best you can to pay any backed taxes and penalties as fast as possible. It the people with a lot of assets that have tax dodged for years that they come down hard. Those people have no excuse to have not paid their taxes. Plus, when someone owes you $500k or more, it's going to take years of litigation before it costs more to fight for it than to just write it off. But if you only owe a couple grand? They can afford probably one years worth of threatening letters before they just start wage garnishments. Or start taking your money that you pay into alimony, and force the courts to come after you that way. They are a passive aggressive bunch, the IRS.

And yes, the IRS will only ever contact you in writing through the US Postal Service only. The Treasury Department on the other hand might have other methods of contact. We only ever deal with the IRS at my job.

Yeah its a scam. In fact, you can go on youtube to find funny vids of people messing with the scammers to make them mad lol

People do this with credit cards - oh we're soooo calling you from your bank to see if you can get a lower interest

And they also like to confuse old people by buying up sites like "goigle.com" so when your grandma goes there, she sees an "error", calls the listed number and gets robbed to have the "error" fixed.

Scum of the earth.

I've got this one scammer, "Anne from account services" who has told me at lest 100 times that now is my "last chance" to lower my interest rates as it applies to the "economic stimulus." Bastards call me every other day, and usually from a different number each time. When you wait to talk to an operator to ask that you be removed, they just hang up. I'd like to reach through the line and strangle the fuckers.

Oh they're assholes.

Just tell them to hold while you get the account holder to come on the phone. Just keep them on hold forever while you continue with your day. Or even better. Go in the restroom and take a very loud poop, while asking them to wait just a minute - you dont want to lose this deal!
